Returning to Peru: A Documentary of Our Mission Trip

May 2, 2018

It was 2008, I was 17 years old, and I was about to leave the country for the first time in my life. I was so excited to be going on my first mission trip! I went with my drama team, CrossWave, and that trip changed my perspective on the world. It also did something else that I wasn’t expecting. It was on that trip that Brandon and I started falling in love with each other. So naturally, being cast as the Prince and Princess in the drama gave us a good excuse to flirt! Peru has always had a special place in our hearts and memories because it reminds us of our earliest days of infatuation with each other. And now, ten years later, some of those moments are still vivid in our minds!

Last summer, June 2017, Brandon and I returned to Peru with CrossWave for the first time since we were married. It was a fantastic experience! We had so many emotions, and it was hard to believe we were really back! The smell of exhaust, the crazy-sounding car horns, the rattling bus, the same hotel, it was all so familiar! San Juan de Lurigancho, a district of Lima, was nearly the same as when we last saw it.  There was one big change, though. Now, hovering high over the median between the main roads was a giant tramway that went as far as you could see in either direction! One night we ministered to people at the metro station where people got on and off of the tram. The noise was deafening, we couldn’t even hear the music coming from our speakers!

Over the last several years, CrossWave has started taking mission trips within Peru to other areas. Last year, CrossWave went to Pomacochas in the Andes Mountains, and it was like a completely different country! We went from brown and dusty to green and clear! It was absolutely beautiful!

Before going to Peru last year, Brandon said he wanted to make a documentary of the trip. We had no idea how daunting that project would become! Once we got home after two weeks in Peru, we had hours of footage and no idea where to even begin. With the help of God, we were able to finally finish our passion project a few weeks ago! In the film, we follow CrossWave through the trip and tell just a few of the God-stories that happened. We were so humbled by the response we got from people who have watched it already. Jesus is still working in Peru, and he’s still working here! Glory to God! We are so proud to share this with you, and we hope you can find the time to sit down and experience for yourself all that God has done!
